Nandapur: A pregnant woman in Koraput district had to be carried on a stretcher for 3 km after an ambulance failed to reach her village Thursday owing to poor road conditions. The incident occurred in Srigamput village under Atanda panchayat in Nandapur block. The 108 ambulance was informed at about 5:30am that 27-year-old Mani Khila was in labour and needed medical assistance.
However, the ambulance could travel only up to 3 km from the village due to poor road conditions. Driver Gopal Krushna Nayak, pharmacist Rahul Pangi and assistant Deepak Patra then walked to the village. They found Khila in severe labour pain and, with the help of her husband Gangadhar Dora, ASHA Ichha Khara and other family members, carried her on a stretcher to the ambulance. The woman was taken safely to the Nandapur Community Health Centre, where she later delivered a boy weighing around 2.5 kg. The incident has highlighted the difficulties faced by residents of the village because of the poor road conditions.
Doctors said the mother and baby were both healthy and stable. They also praised the 108 ambulance staff members for bringing the woman to the health facility in time. Her husband and family members expressed their gratitude to them. Reports said that during the rainy season, 243 villages in Nandapur block face similar road connectivity problems.
