Baleshwar: A Bangladeshi national who served a 14-year prison sentence in Odisha after being convicted in multiple criminal cases was deported to Bangladesh Wednesday following the completion of all legal formalities, police said.
Baleshwar Superintendent of Police Pratyush Dibakar said Mohammad Babu Khan, a resident of Hamirdi village under Bhanga police limits in Faridpur district of Bangladesh, was handed over for deportation after authorities verified his nationality and secured the required travel documents.
According to police, Khan illegally entered India in 2002 without a valid passport or visa in search of work. He later settled in Baleshwar and allegedly became involved in criminal activities, including robbery and dacoity.
Nine cases were registered against him at Town, Basta, Sadar, Industrial and Remuna police stations. He was arrested May 27, 2007, for illegally staying in India.
In October 19, 2012, the Ad hoc Additional Sessions Court in Baleshwar convicted him under Section 395 of the Indian Penal Code and sentenced him to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 2,000.
The court also ordered an additional one-year jail term in default of payment of the fine.
After completing his sentence, Khan was released from Baleshwar District Jail June 8, 2026, and was subsequently lodged at a temporary detention centre under police security pending deportation.
His nationality was verified by the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata, following which travel and exit permits were issued.
A special police escort team led by Sub-Inspector Alok Kumar Jena took Khan to the India-Bangladesh border for deportation.
The SP said authorities would continue taking strict action against foreign nationals found staying illegally in the country and engaging in criminal activities, adding that the deportation reflected ongoing efforts to maintain law and order and curb illegal infiltration.
