Koraput: The blood-soaked body of a Class VIII student was recovered from a drain behind Gumuda Government High School in Borigumma block of Koraput district Wednesday, triggering suspicion of murder and protests by the victim’s family members and villagers.
The deceased was identified as Gurunath of Marad Maliguda village under Haradaguda panchayat.
He was staying in the school hostel and attending classes. According to family members, Gurunath had been missing from the school campus since Monday.
Wednesday, his body was recovered from the drain behind the school.
The family has alleged that the school authorities neither informed the police nor senior officials about his disappearance nor alerted them about the recovery of the body.
Police from B Singhpur station reached the spot, recovered the body and launched an investigation. The circumstances leading to the student’s death are yet to be established.
Meanwhile, demanding justice, the victim’s family members and villagers staged a protest placing the body outside the school.
They demanded a thorough investigation and action against those found responsible for the student’s death.
The incident has raised questions over the management and supervision of hostels run for students in the tribal-dominated area. Neither the school authorities nor officials of the concerned department were immediately available for comment.
