Baisinga: Police arrested seven people from Baleshwar district for allegedly attempting to rob a Union Bank branch at Managobindapur under Baisinga police station in Mayurbhanj district, after the bank’s advanced anti-theft security system alerted officials to the break-in.
The incident took place late Monday night when the bank was closed for a prolonged holiday period. While the suspects were allegedly attempting to enter the bank, its alarm suddenly went off on the branch manager’s mobile phone. An alert was also sent to the bank’s head office in Bengaluru, which informed the police. By the time police were alerted, the seven suspects had allegedly broken the grille of the bank’s main entrance and entered the premises.
Baisinga police station inspector-in-charge Babashankar Saraf and a team reached the spot. On seeing the police, the suspects allegedly abandoned their attempt to break open the strong room and tried to flee in the car they had arrived in. Police chased the vehicle along the Manatri-Baisinga road and intercepted it near Baisinga Square. Police seized a car bearing a West Bengal registration number, WB 20 Z 9756, and arrested the seven suspects, all from Baleshwar district. They are being questioned. A mobile phone allegedly stolen from inside the bank, along with various tools and equipment, was also recovered from their possession.
Acting on a written complaint filed by the bank’s security officer, Uttam Kumar Prusty, Baisinga police registered a case (474/26) and launched an investigation. The incident has also raised questions over security arrangements at the branch, as no security personnel were reportedly present on the bank premises at night.
