Bhubaneswar, Dec 21: The College of Basic Sciences and Humanities, a constituent college of the Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) is all set for a grand celebration to mark its golden jubilee, which is to be inaugurated by Governor SC Jamir in the presence of OUAT vice-chancellor Manoranjan Kar.
The Puri Shankaracharya will grace the month-long celebrations January 9. OUAT has also invited Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik as well as Union ministers Dharmendra Pradhan and Smriti Irani to attend the celebrations.
The college has achieved many milestones. Recently it received accreditation from the University Grants Commission (UGC), which will further help the institution get more central assistance.
“We have urged the UGC to release a grant of `115 crore for developmental projects, as part of which we plan to set up a Centre of Excellence. We will also work for the infrastructural and academic expansion of the college,” said Bikas Panda, the director of College of Basic Science and Humanities at a press briefing here.
The college has put in immense efforts to intensify the research work. At present, there are eight ongoing externally funded research projects in various departments. Four of these projects are awaiting final approval.
The college has a Ph D programme in microbiology since 2010. It also offers M Sc in physics, chemistry, mathematics, zoology and botany. From the coming academic year, the college plans to start M Sc in biotechnology and computer science, as well as Ph D in all subjects.
“Our college has achieved many feats in the past years. Our alumni have occupied very high positions in India and abroad. Some of them have been selected in the world’s top ranking universities, including Harvard Medicine School, Max Planck Institute and the University of Nottingham,” said Panda.
