Pradosh Swain, acclaimed photographer and artist from the state who has made a name for himself on the national art scene and is now based in Delhi, was in the city recently to participate in an art exhibition. In an interview with Orissa Post, Swain talks of how art as a career is gradually gaining acceptance and how he evolved as an artist over the years…

What led to your decision to pursue art as a career? Was your decision met with approval from your family?
Well, my parents initially wanted me to become a doctor. Back then, they didn’t know I had a creative spark and that I wanted to be an artist. When I was 12, I came across a painting made by my elder brother and was fascinated by it. That led me to take up drawing. Later, I bagged first prize in the All Orissa Child Art Competition organised by Lalit Kala Akademi. This was a huge encouragement. After finishing school I enrolled at the BK College of Art and Craft, from where it all began.

Is it tough being an artist? What are the challenges like?
I think it requires a lot of dedication and sacrifice in order to become a truly good artist. It also requires sacrifices as it is a fulltime occupation. I had to leave my job and go to Delhi to learn Indian contemporary art. That decision has proven to be fruitful so far. Regarding the challenges, I think the first few years were the toughest. I went through a lot but didn’t give up. I sometimes caught myself wondering if I was in the wrong career, but I felt redeemed when I was invited to display my art at a national-level solo painting show. Till now, I have displayed my paintings around twelve times at a national-level painting show. Creating paintings is now part of my life.

What kind of paintings do you like to come up with?
My paintings are usually based on surrealist works. I also love to work on environmental issues. I have also been working on illustrations of the 12 signs of the zodiac based on surrealist themes. I have been getting positive feedback so far.

Who are your influences, and where do you see yourself down the line?
My elder brother has been a big source of inspiration since childhood. After meeting experts from the field, my field of inspiration has grown bigger and now I’m inspired by several of them. Right now I’m just trying to excel at being an artist. I want my art to receive appreciation from across the country and I want to win the hearts of people through my paintings. It is not easy and I’m doing my best.

Born in 1972 in Orissa, Pradosh Swain has received several prestigious awards including Sanskruti Samman conferred by the Governor of Orissa in 2012, Orissa State Award by Lalit Kala Akademi in 1996, Orissa State Youth Award by department of sports in 1997, Drawing Master Association in 1987, Jagannathyan by Lalit Kala Akademi-2005, and Intach for Orissa Heritage Day in 1991 and 1993. He is now pursuing a career in the field of art, digital designing and photography.
