Pipili: The Bhubaneswar-Puri National Highway has turned into a haven for stray cows, cattle and bulls, posing a serious threat to motorists and passengers.
The highway stretch between Bhubaneswar and Puri has become a death trap, with thousands of devotees and visitors travelling to Puri every day, making the path prone to accidents. With stray cattle and bulls frequently occupying the carriageway, minor and major accidents occur almost every day.
While some passengers have lost their lives in such accidents, many others have sustained serious injuries and are battling for survival. The highway is used by visitors from across the country and abroad, as well as dignitaries from the state and outside.
The poor condition of the road, coupled with the presence of stray cattle, has brought disrepute to Puri, which attracts visitors from around the world. Despite the sensitivity of the issue, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) authorities have allegedly failed to take note of the problem.
Residents have repeatedly complained that the NHAI has remained inactive despite reports of frequent accidents taking place every day. The highway has virtually turned into a cowshed, with stray cattle and bulls using it as a shelter. Farmers have raised the issue with political parties and the administration, but no solution has emerged so far.
The growing frustration is threatening to turn into a major agitation. Concerned citizens have urged the state government and district administration to take immediate steps and find a permanent solution to the problem.
