Bhubaneswar: Opposition BJP members in Odisha Assembly Wednesday stalled the business of the house protesting against the police excesses on the BJP Yuva Morcha workers during a protest rally in Bhubaneswar Tuesday.
Carrying newspapers, posters and FIR copy BJP members rushed onto the podium and raised slogans against the police action on BJP workers and demanded a debate on the issue when the house assembled for the day to take up the question hour business.
Speaker B K Arukh however, ignoring the protest of the BJP members, wanted to run the question hour and asked Agriculture Minister Ranendra Pratap Swain to reply to a question which was vehemently opposed by the BJP members.
They intensified their slogan shoutings, showed newspapers to the Speaker about the police excesses and disrupted the business of the house.
The Speaker, unable to bring the house into order, adjourned it till 1130 hours without transacting any business.
Later talking to newsmen, BJP Chief whip Mohan Majhi said the BJP wanted to raise the issue of police excesses on the BJP workers in the house but the Speaker did not allow it.
He said Tuesday the BJP Yuva Morcha held a peaceful demonstration to gherao the state Assembly over the deteriorating law and order situation and the murder of health minister Naba Das but the police resorted to lathi-charge on BJP workers in which 30 to 40 BJP workers were injured and admitted into the hospital.
Majhi said the police booked the BJP workers under 307 of the IPC at the behest of the BJD government which he alleged is running a “ goonda raj” in the state.
The BJP Chief whip further said several police personnel were admitted to the hospital on a false pretext of being injured in the clash while the injured BJP workers were not allowed treatment in the hospital.
He condemned the police brutality on the BJP workers and said the party protested the action of the police in the Assembly Wednesday.
