Semiliguda: The future of the inmates of a Tribal Residential Welfare (TRW) Ashram school in Sadam panchayat of this block in Koraput district seems uncertain with the supply of substandard meals and absence of teaching faculties.
The hostel of the school houses only 40 students against its capacity of 70. It is alleged that the students are always served poor quality food which affects their growth and leads to health issues.
Forget about fish or meat, the inmates hardly get an opportunity to see eggs on their platters. They are surviving on substandard quality dal and rice, said the locals.
Earlier, egg curry was served on Wednesdays and Fridays. But eggs have not been in the sight for the last one year. Some students were seen taking their meals sitting in the open.
This apart, bathroom essentials like oil and soaps are also not given to the inmates. The headmaster threatens to rusticate the students in case of the slightest resistance by the latter, it was learnt.
On the other hand no teacher or any other official remains present in the hostel to solve the problems of the inmates. They are solely dependent on the cook in case of emergency.
The reaction of the district welfare officer couldn’t be taken in this regard.
Unsafe school building puts off students
Koraput: The Bharati primary school at Chipakur panchayat under Boipariguda block in this district has been plagued by a host of problems including shortage of teachers and safety of the building.
The walls of the school building have developed cracks. Fearing a wall collapse, the guardians have stopped sending their wards to the school.
Besides, the school has only two teachers for over 50 students. A budget was sanctioned 10 years ago for the construction of a new classroom. However, the teacher on duty embezzled the money, it was alleged. The teacher died around two years ago.
Block education officer Sudhir Chandra Rath said, “Some amount would be deducted from the encashment of fund to be disbursed to the deceased teacher’s family. This procedure will take some time.”
Meanwhile, the locals have threatened to launch an agitation if the construction of the school building was not completed soon.
