Bhubaneswar, Dec 16: After competing the paper work, Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) Tuesday started marking spaces for the proposed on-street colour coded parking lots on the lines of London between Janpath and Rajmahal Square.
The civic body has earmarked spaces for the four and two wheelers and auto-rickshaw parking lots mainly alongside the Janpath to kick off the pilot project aimed at streamlining traffic.
Notably, municipal commissioner Krishan Kumar and twin city police commissioner Rajendra Prasad Sharma December 2 had inspected Vani Vihar-Sishu Bhawan stretch to assess the encroachment situation. The duo had asked the city enforcement monitoring committee’s (CEMC) eviction squads to bring down encroachments along the stretch.
The corporation and commissionerate police are envisaging on-street parking lots for organised parking system after Kumar and Sharma went to London for an exposure visit to learn traffic management system in the United Kingdom’s capital.
At present, BMC has chosen Master Canteen-Rajmahal Square stretch in the first phase to emulate on-street parking lots in the city. Krishan Kumar told this newspaper if the project succeeds if would be replicated to other prominent stretches to curb traffic chaos and improve parking facility.
“Three types of parking lots would be set up between Master Canteen and Rajamahal Square i.e. for cars, bikes/scooters and para-transit or auto-rickshaws. There would be dedicated stands for auto-rickshaws to streamline traffic,” Kumar remarked, adding that adequate spaces have been earmarked for four and two wheelers’ parking.
He admitted that auto-rickshaws are creating a lot of nuisance due to which BMC has decided to provide them dedicated parking space for smooth traffic on one of the prominent stretches of city.
If sources are to be believed, BMC is soon going to rope in several contractors to manage the proposed 21 on-street parking lots on Vani Vihar-Sishu Bhawan stretch.
