Bhubaneswar, April 19: The general administration department (GAD) has earmarked 0.244 acres of land for the development of a gymnasium-cum-community centre by Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) at Samantapuri mouza.
It would take a year to develop the facility for the residents of Samantapuri on the outskirts of the city, according to source. The civic body had sought the land from GAD six months ago.
A BMC official said people of the area had for long been demanding a gymnasium and community centre and in view of this the civic body has decided to establish both facilities at the same site.
A majority of the city’s private gymnasiums charge between `300 and `1,500 per person per month, a BMC official said, adding that thegymnasium would have “reasonable” charges.
“Sophisticated equipment would be installed in the gym so that the youth need not pay a lot of money to build their physique. We have yet to figure out whether the gymnasium would be set up in a public private partnership mode or through BMC’s own resources,” said mayor AN Jena.
The civic body had proposed the development of a gym after the Bhubaneswar Development Authority unveiled its gymnasium at Indira Gandhi Park.
