Bhubaneswar: Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) mayor Ananta Narayan Jena Wednesday launched a van for spreading awareness on night shelters for the homeless run by the civic body in city.
“The vehicle, equipped with loudspeakers and banners would traverse some of the busy stretches of the city such as Master Canteen Square, bus terminals and other landmarks to provide information to citizens about night shelters in city at Malisahi and at Bhimpur,” said the mayor.
BMC has roped in a city-based NGO working for the welfare of destitutes, Patita Uddhar Samiti, to identify the homeless in the city. A survey has been initiated towards this end, said officials.
The mayor also urged citizens to inform volunteers of the samiti about any homeless people in their neighbourhood so that they could be taken to the shelters.
