Bhubaneswar: The BMC has warned of stern action against people dumping garbage on the drainage lines. The civic body has started an awareness campaign on this issue, by way of a first step, as garbage dumping is resulting in water-logging at several places.
With the monsoon showers getting strong, the garbage dumps are chocking the drains, and as a result they are overflowing at several locations. Removing this garbage has become a major challenge to the civic body.
“We have already started an awareness campaign. This is one of the major reasons for water-logging at several places. If this is continued, we will take stern action against the offenders,” said mayor Ananta Narayan Jena.
The civic body Sunday deployed 12 OAS officers in 12 subzones of BMC to address the water logging issues. Around 30 engineers and their teams are on the job at vulnerable points identified from the past experience of raining.
Significantly, the control room (0674-2430038) at BMC received 36 complaints from various areas Sunday. According to officials, the city is generating more than 500MT of solid waste a single day and many are dumping them into the nearby drains or drainage channels.
“It is a fact that blocking of the drains and drainage channels with dumped solid wastes, and encroachments on the water channels, have emerged as two major concerns for the civic body. We have cleared several channels clogged with waste materials and our officials are working round the clock to manage the situation,” said a top BMC official.
Based on the previous rainy day’s experience, officials started their work from morning. The team took a 5hp pump set to Bairaginagar, Dumduma, Jharpada, ISKON area, Mayfair back side, VSS Nagar and Chintamaniswar to clear the clogged drains.
Earlier, a civic team demolished an encroachment over the natural drainage channel. The surveillance team of BMC Saturday demolished a 50-foot-long boundary wall near the meeting point of Mancheswar Railway Coach Factory and VSS Nagar area adjoining the Dhirikuti Basti, officials said. Development commissioner R Balkrishna was briefed by BMC commissioner on the water-logging situation and handling of the same.
