Kendrapara: The bank of Chitrotola river near Sasanipada village in Kendrapara district came alive with the traditional boat race Sunday Morning.
It was one of the most thrilling and exhilarating experiences for the villagers. Locals admired the stunning natural beauty and experienced the serenity of the marvelous water race as they soaked in the tranquil vibes of the local culture.
A hundreds of villagers in the coastal region flocked the river bank to witness the unique, incredible and adventurous boat race that spoke volume about the culture and heritage of the region. The boat race is a prominent feature of the region and binds the people in communal harmony.
Every year, scores of villagers get together and participate in the boat race along the river. The region comes alive with a festive spirit as the 5km boat race is the highlight of the three day Chitrotola Balijatra festival at Sasanipada. As many as 45 boats assembled in the river to join the race.
“The boat race is undoubtedly the most exciting event of the year. The race was organised by the District Fisherman’s Association in association with Balijatra Organising Committee,” said Surendranath Behera president of Chitrotola Balijatra Committee.
The traditionally dressed rowers were cheered by an exuberant crowd.” The event draws a large number of locals by nearby villagers. Boat races have been always been a part of the traditional of fisherman,” said Dilip Kumar Mohapatra, secretary of Chitrotola Balijatra committee.
The history origin of the boat races goes decades back. These races were started in order to create enthusiasm and to inculcate a sporting spirit amongst the people of the villages. It also gives a feeling of unity and brotherhood among the villagers.
But the boat race, which is being held annually for decades, has lost some of its sheen as only a few youngsters are keen to participate in the event.
“Nowadays, youths are not interested to eke out a living in sea,” said Gayadhar Behera, a fisherman of Sasanipada. Ajaya Patra and Karunakar Behera stood first in the race and they got Rs 5,000 each.
