Bolangir youth gets artificial hands

Cuttack: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik Wednesday handed over two myoelectric hands to Khirod Mishra of Raghavpali village in Bolangir district. Mishra (25) had lost both hands after armed miscreants chopped them off July 7, 2015.

The myoelectric hands, which were procured at a cost of Rs 6 lakh, can perform 60 per cent of the tasks that human hands can, said Dr Mukesh Joshi of Mumbai who has developed the hands.
The artificial hands are wholly-controlled by a computer system. They are powered by two batteries that will function for eight hours at a stretch. The hands need to undergo maintenance once a year.
The money for the hands was given from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. Mishra expressed his gratitude by writing “Thank You Sri Naveen Patnaik Sir” on a piece of paper with the help of his artificial hands.
Like kidney transplantation, the implant of artificial limbs will bring new hope for those who lose their limbs because of accidents or other causes, said doctors. PNN
