Chandbali, Dec 28: A Bottlenose dolphin was rescued in a canal of Salandi river near Badasinhgpur village under Madhapur panchayat Sunday. The dolphin with a long snout and sharp teeth was entangled in a fishing net and later released into Salandi river.
Some locals spotted the animal dipping and resurfacing near Ghatapur sluice gate Saturday. They suspected it to be either a crocodile or a whale and informed the wildlife officials. Irrawaddy dolphins are found in Baitarani.
The mammal was rescued. Range officer Basant Barik said that it was a female Bottlenose dolphin, measuring 8 feet in length and weighing 80 kg. The mammal was loaded onto a tractor and released into Salandi river at Dhanakhani ghat. Though it is a marine species, it is sometimes found in sweet
water too.
