Jajpur/Dasarathpur: An 11-year-old boy was swept away in floodwaters overflowing on Ichhapur village road and drowned under Kayan panchayat of Dasarathpur block in Jajpur district.
The incident took place Monday.
The deceased was identified as Rudra, son of Saroj Sahani and a student of Class VI in a local school.
According to local residents, Rudra could not distinguish the flooded village road from an adjoining field as both were submerged. He lost his footing and was swept away by the current. Family members rescued and rushed him to a hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. Residents said the delay in taking him to the hospital due to widespread flooding might have contributed to his death.
Floodwaters about five feet deep were flowing over roads across villages under Kayan panchayat, making road travel difficult. Rudra was first taken by boat to the Kayangola market area. From there, he was transported by a 108 ambulance to Mangalpur and later to the Jajpur District Headquarters Hospital. Residents said the multiple stages of the journey caused considerable delay and Rudra could not be saved.
