Nilagiri: A 42-year-old patient died when he fell down after getting entangled in a cable wire left haphazardly by a contractor on Nilagiri sub-divisional hospital premises, Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Karan Singh, a native of Ambajhar under this block in Balasore district.
The incident has sparked resentment and anger among the residents and patients undergoing treatment at the hospital. They alleged that the man died due to the apathy of the hospital authorities and negligence on the part of the contractor executing the work. They have demanded stringent action against the persons responsible for the patient’s death.
Reports said Singh was admitted to the hospital after he complained of some illness, Friday. However, he had to lie on the floor due to a lack of enough beds in the hospital. He was recovering and was likely to be discharged soon.
The incident occurred when he was going out to a nearby washroom as the existing toilet in the ward was unclean and unfit for use.
However, Singh fell down as his legs got entangled in the cable wires lying scattered on the hospital premises, his family members alleged. He sustained severe head injuries and died, they added.
Nilagiri sub-divisional medical officer Sarojini Pradhan said, “We wonder why the patient was going out to another toilet.” She, however, said a probe will be conducted to find out whether he died due to his entrapment in the cable wires or due to some other reasons. “The contractor was earlier instructed to clear the cables and he was also warned,” she added.
