Bhubaneswar: The state government has raised the intake capacity of five teacher education institutions for admission to Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) courses.
The government has also cleared decks for introduction of Bachelor of Physical Education (BPEd.) courses in two institutions and Diploma in Art Education (DAE) courses in one institute with effect from next academic session.
According to the government approval, B.Ed intake would be enhanced at District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs) at Bhadrak, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Jagatsinghpur and Puri. The institutes will raise the B.Ed intake by 50 students.
Similarly, the DIETs in Kalahandi and Cuttack will offer BPEd. courses with an intake capacity of 100 students each while DIET at Sundargarh will admit 50 students for DAE course.
“As per new guidelines of the Centre, we have decided to increase intake for teacher training courses in the state,” said an official of school and mass education department.
Notably, 22 teacher education institutions across the state have sought a raise in intake capacity for new courses. However, the committee constituted to evaluate the institutions has selected eight of them from the point of view of their infrastructure and staff strength.
Similarly, the committee has chosen 17 government colleges and seven universities to offer teacher education courses from the next academic year.
“The approval stage is over. Now, we will seek recognition from the National Council of Teacher Education. Once they satisfy the norms of infrastructure and other matters, we will start offering programmes immediately,” said the official.
