Cases surge again in Odisha as rate of testing gathers pace after cyclone ‘Yaas’

Bhubaneswar: New cases of Covid-19 infections spiked against in Odisha after a day’s gap as the rate of testing decreased. The state reported 7,216 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total tally in the state to 7,39,955. Earlier Thursday, the state had registered 6,376 cases of new infections.

Odisha reported 33 new fatalities taking the tally in the state to 2,651 as per a tweet of Health and Family Welfare department. Angul district with five deaths topped the list of fatalities. It was followed by Sundargarh (four), Boudh, Kalahandi, Keonjhar and Khurda (three each), Gajapati, Jharsuguda, Kendrapara, Koraput and Rayagada districts (two each); Dhenkanal and Nabarangpur districts (one each). Incidentally all the three fatalities in Khurda district were recorded in the state capital.

The active caseload in Odisha now stands at 1,02,072. Out of the 7,216 new infections reported, 4,041 were reported from quarantine centres while 3,175 persons contracted the virus locally.

Cuttack district registered the highest number of new Covid-19 cases with 1,091 persons testing positive for the disease. It was followed by Khurda with 809 new infections.

Other districts that reported new Covid-19 cases are: Kendrapara (487), Dhenkanal (428), Angul (409), Bargarh (331), Bhadrak and Rayagada (246 each), Nabarangpur (242), Jajpur and Sambalpur (241 each), Koraput (220), Balasore (215), Sundargarh (184), Jagatsinghpur (183), Nayagarh (164), Ganjam and Kalahandi (150 each), Boudh (148), Malkangiri (135), Bolangir (130), Puri (110), Kandhamal (101), Subarnapur (74), Keonjhar (72), Deogarh (68), Nuapada (66), Jharsuguda (64), Gajapati (38) and Mayurbhanj (27).

The State Pool reported 146 new cases in the last 24 hours. These are persons who have come from outside Odisha and have tested positive.

A total of 1,15,96,753 swab samples have been cumulatively tested so far. The number of new recoveries stands at 11,551.
