Rayagada, Feb 2: A doctor of the Chandrapur community health centre in Rayagada district was arrested by police Monday morning for allegedly assaulting women health workers and sent to jail.
The arrest comes on the basis of complaints by women health workers that the doctor, Sanjeev Kumar Behera, had assaulted them on the health centre premises January 31.
The health workers were injured in the assault and were admitted to a health centre at Muniguda.
The health workers said that they had asked the doctor why their salaries had been withheld for the last few months. However, instead of telling them the reason, the doctor misbehaved with them, they alleged.
The health workers also accused Behera of demanding `5,000 bribe from each of them to clear their salaries.
The administration has formed a committee comprising tehsildar Tapan Kumar Satpathy, a police official Ananta Charan Mallick and additional district medical officer Laxmi Narayan Prusty to inquire into the matter. The team went to Chandrapur health centre and spoke with the staff about the incident.
Chandrapur police registered a case under sections 294, 323, 341, 354 of the Indian Penal Code and section 3(a) of the Prevention of Atrocities (SC and ST) Act on the basis of complaints filed by the women health workers.
The arrested doctor was produced in court and sent to the Bissamkatak sub-jail after the court rejected his bail application.
