Chhatrapur: All households in the municipal limits of this town will get drinking water by February end as work on a project at Hanspur is nearing completion, a report said Sunday.
G Arati, chairperson of the Notified Area Council (NAC) in Chhatrapur, said Sunday that the project, after completion, will be able to supply drinking water from Rushikulya River to every household in the town.
The project is being completed at a cost of Rs 7 crore. The civic body has completed laying water pipelines at an estimated cost of Rs 15 lakh. However, pipelines are yet to be laid near Rikapalli railway check gate for which Rs 15 lakh will be spent.
The Hansapur project has been delayed as the local residents had opposed it during its inception. Later, they relented after the authorities agreed to fulfil their demands during discussions with them.
An overhead water tank has also been constructed at Chhatrapur. Construction of a sump has already been completed while other ancillary works are underway. The project, after being operational, will be able to supply water to every household in the town, officials of the public health engineering department (PHED) claimed.
Sources said Chhatrapur NAC consisting of 14 wards and a population of over 27,000 is facing water shortage. Many new residential hubs have come up in the town where the department is yet to lay pipelines for supply of drinking water.
However, the PHED has not been able to meet the burgeoning demand for drinking water. According to an estimate, while there is a requirement for 3.56 MLD of water for the town, the department is able to supply only 1.85 MLD of water drawn from Tampara tank and Rushikulya River.
The department has prepared two separate estimates for supplying drinking water to various areas in the town: A Rs 13.16-lakh plan for Mahabir Nagar and other areas and a Rs15-lakh outlay for 11 wards. PNN
