Koraput: A bid to marry-off a minor girl was foiled by the Koraput district Child Welfare Committee (CWC) and Kundura police at Bamunigaon under Jeypore PS limits in this district.
According to reports, the marriage of a girl was fixed with a youth from Limkiaguda village under Kundura police limits a few days ago, without her knowledge.
When the girl refused to marry the youth, her father panicked and decided to marry her younger daughter, is a Class X student, with the same youth.
Both the girls were kept at Jeynagar in Jeypore town Saturday after the wedding date was fixed. Meanwhile, the minor girl called the toll-free number of the district child protection unit (DCPU) and narrated her ordeal.
Following orders of DCPU president Gayatri Devi and DCPO Rajashri Das, a team rushed to the village and rescued the minor girl before the marriage could be solmenised.
The minor girl said that she is interested in further studies and would not marry at an early age.
