Bhubaneswar: Several citizens across age groups enthusiastically participated in a cycling event in the Capital City to mark the ‘World Bicycle Day’, Monday. The event, organised by the Bhubaneswar Cycling and Adventure Club (BCAC), started at 6am from Unit VI area. The participants, which included BCAC members, were seen riding an array of bicycles wearing neon-green and blue club jerseys and colourful helmets. The large peloton of cyclists, ranging from children as young as five years to seniors over 65 years of age, created a captivating wave on the streets, impressing onlookers and motorists. The peloton took a brief halt at ‘I love Bhubaneswar’ insignia to take a few snaps before moving towards Ram Mandir, Exhibition Ground, Acharya Vihar, Kalinga Hospital Square and Patia, before finally reaching Nandankanan where they met a group from Cuttack.
Twin city Police Commissioner and BCAC president Sanjeeb Panda, who was present on the occasion, highlighted the importance of cycling. “As responsible citizens, everyone should adopt cycling in wherever possible to stay healthy and fit,” he said. He also emphasised the impact of cycling for a sustainable community and environment-friendly city. “We must incorporate cycling in our daily life for fitness, less carbon footprints and enduring a better tomorrow,” he added. BCAC, as one of the leading cycling and adventure clubs in Bhubaneswar, continues to promote cycling through regular expeditions and events, advocating it as a healthier and eco-friendly mode of transportation.
The United Nations acknowledged the impact of cycling by designating June 3 as the ‘World Bicycle Day’ during its 72nd General Assembly April 12, 2018. Embracing the resolution, BCAC has been organising the ‘World Bicycle Day’ event every year with a rally from its Club House (VIR-11, Unit VI) to Nandankanan which attracts cyclists from the City and neighbouring Cuttack.
