Bhubaneswar, May 15: It was a case of so near and yet so far for Orissa’s tennis player Chinmay Pradhan who finished as runner-up in the AITA Men’s and Women’s 50K Ranking tennis tournament. In the final played Friday in New Delhi, local boy Ansuman Galia won two tight tie-breaks to beat Chinmay 7-6 (7-5), 2-6, 7-6 (9-7) and win the title.
The Orissa lad will however have himself to blame for missing out on the opportunity to become the first Orissa player to win a men’s AITA title out of the state. He had one set point in the first set and also had two match points during the tie-break in the third set. But failed to utilise his chances and lost the match.
Chinmay, whose current Indian ranking is 65, will get eight points after finishing runner-up. His ranking is expected to rise to 35 as he also got 10 points while playing at Raipur.
