“Although we can’t claim to have taken cinematic liberty, the plot of the film is inspired by a real incident,” says Prashant Pal, director of the upcoming Oriya film Kartavya. While debutants Satyanjeet and Priyadarshini will be seen romancing on the screen, veterans Bijay Mohanty, Ashrumochan, Jeevan Panda, Rabi Mishra and Bhupati and actress Tanushree will share screen space with the lead pair. Sunday POST interacted with the cast and crew of the film during its music launch in Bhubaneswar recently.

“Just as its name suggests the film revolves around an ideal school teacher who vows to perform his social duty (‘kartavya’). While he faces the music for raising his voice against corruption, his students come to his aid. The film, which is both for common man as well as a discerning audience, has a resounding social message to convey,” says Pal.
“Mohd Aziz has lent voice to the sad version of the title track ‘Kartavyara mane kichhi nahin’ that was sequenced when the film’s protagonist, the teacher, was in jail. Sung by Madhav, the title track ‘Kartavya Mulyahina’ was sequenced when the teacher discovered that he had been trapped. The movie has a catchy romantic track, ‘Khudaka Sukriya’, a dance number, ‘Halijiba Katak Puri’, sung by Kumar Biju and Tina, and an item song, ‘Tension tablet’, a solo by Sanju,” says P Kumar, the music director of the film.
Lead actor Satyanjeet Purohit, who has a lot of albums to his credit, says: “Album is easy, but cinema is tough. In albums dance sequences accompany songs, but in films you also need to mouth the dialogues. I had many scenes opposite veteran actor Bijay Mohanty. The experience was marvelous.”
Priyadarshini, the heroine of the film, has worked in albums like ‘Swapna’, ‘Chandrabati’ and ‘Diwana Tu Baneidelu’. Her mega serial ‘Bai Chadhei’ will shortly be aired on Doordarshan. “Although I have faced the camera earlier, this film was a real test for me,” she says.
