Bhubaneswar: Continuing its drive against illegal use of polythene and plastic for packaging, the special squad of the North Zone of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) along with the special squad of Bhubaneswar Development Authority Wednesday seized 5 kg of polythene and imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on a pharmacy at Damana Square here.
Zonal Deputy Commissioner Pramod Kumar Prusty led the drive. “We are continuing our efforts to make the city polythene/plastic-free and we hope that business establishments should act voluntarily and shun the use of the materials banned by the civic authorities,’’ he said.
Meanwhile, the special enforcement squad of the North Zone also issued 220 notices to different shop owners and business establishments for not using Odia on signage and hoardings as directed by the state government.
It was earlier decided that BMC will monitor use of Odia language by commercial establishments and shops on their signboards within the Corporation limits as per the provisions under the Odisha Shops and Commercial Establishments (Amendment) Act, 2018, passed by the Odisha Legislative Assembly May 25, 2018.
CALL FOR DISCIPLINE
BMC Deputy Commissioner (Enforcement) Subhranshu Mishra has urged the people and vendors along the 80-km priority road network to try to be self-disciplined and keep the roadsides and footpaths free from encroachments.
“In view of the coming hockey World Cup we expect that people should behave as responsible citizens and make their vicinity clean and beautiful so that the visitors would find the city smart, clean and sportive,’’ he added.
He said the civic body has formed a team of 8 special squads to keep the priority road network free from encroachment during the hockey tournament.
