Bhubaneswar, July 19:Denizens in the city got a glimpse of the rarely-known bonding between Mahatma Gandhi and his spiritual mentor Shrimad Rajchandraji through a play staged at Rabindra Mandap recently. The actors from Shrimad Rajchandra Mission in Mumbai mesmerized the theatregoers here with their staging of ‘Yugpurush-Mahatma’s Mahatma.’ This inspirational play, based on Mahatma Gandhi’s life, has completed 700 shows across India in just 245 days. It is a riveting portrayal of the close association between Mahatma Gandhi and Shrimad Rajchandraji. What began as a sincere friendship, later culminated in Gandhjii’s procla
mation of Shrimadji as his spiritual mentor. The play invites the audience to journey through Gandhiji’s internal and overt advancements on the spiritual path following interactions, letters and inspirations from Shrimad Rajchandraji. “Yugpurush highlights the values of expanding one’s capacity to love and offer selflessly towards respecting diversity, supporting truth, fostering trust, and building lasting communities. It brings to the forefront a powerful experience of looking within, upholding truth and fearlessness, as well as transforming character and consciousness,” said Mehul Khokhani. The year 2017 marks the 150th birth year of Shrimad Rajchandraji. Thus,
the play has been produced under the guidance of Shrimad Rajchandraji’s ardent devotee and the founder of Shrimad Rajchandra Mission Dharampur, Pujya Gurudevshri Rakeshbhai, to celeb-rate this glorious year. “The birth and life of the great ones are worth remembering. They awaken our latent strength and kindle the desire to become like them,” said Pujya
Gurudevshri. The play was first performed on November 14, 2016. Since then, it has been performed at several places. “In order to cater to the huge demand for the play, seven teams are now performing the play in seven different cities, simultaneously. The play is currently running in Gujarati, Hindi, Marathi, Kannada and Bengali. It will soon be released in English and Tamil. In the coming year, the play will be performed in all parts of India as well as overseas in USA, Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Australia, UAE, Oman, Kenya and South Africa, to name a few,” he added.

THE PLOT The multi-lingual play starts with Gandhiji reminiscing about his past on the day of his assassination. The Mahatma is shown telling his associates about Shrimad Rajchandraji—his mentor and the man who influenced his life to a great extent. The play is a perfect juxtaposition of the past and the present as the older Gandhi on stage and his younger self and the guru takes
the audience through his entire life in two hours.
