Bhubaneswar: In a bid to woo voters before the urban election, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik will launch 545 urban water supply projects at a special function to be organised at Barabati Indoor Stadium in Cuttack, October 20.
“CM will formally launch the projects approved in the annual action plan under urban water supply scheme 2017-18 and also dedicate about 200 projects for achieving universal coverage of water supply covering all wards of all 113 urban local bodies (ULBs),” said an official of the housing and urban development department here Sunday.
The laying of foundation stone and inauguration of the projects will be done through video-conferencing by the Chief Minister, he said.
During this ceremony, Patnaik will also inaugurate water-testing laboratories set up at Puri and Cuttack on Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode.
Earlier, the government had asked Public Health Engineering Organisation (PHEO) to prepare a special action plan to ensure coverage of all the households of ULB areas with piped water supply network. Following this, the ULBs have approved the action plan prepared for the concerned civic body. The PHEO would execute the water supply projects which were approved by the Council of the ULBs and the state government, sources said.
According to official data, the urban population needs about 1,000 million litres of water per day while the state is able to supply 877 MLD water through piped water supply projects. About 50 lakh people (75 per cent of total urban population) has been covered under various water supply projects so far. The government has targeted to achieve the universal coverage of water supply by 2020.
