Cuttack, June 5: Cuttack Municipal Corporation’s ‘sweep twice a day’ order has not gone down well with the sweepers of the silver city, who had staged a protest demonstration recently and have warned to intensify their stir if the order is not withdrawn immediately.
“Our sweeper brothers and sisters are already under a lot of stress. Now they are asking us to sweep the wards two times which is injustice to us. We are underpaid and our wage is inadequate for us to survive,” rued Amar Nayak, leader of the sweepers association.
He added, “There are workers who have been working for more than six years now but their services are yet to be regularized. We are warning the civic authorities to withdraw the order otherwise we will stop the work in every ward and the CMC will be responsible for this,” warned Nayak.
There are about 200 sweepers engaged in cleaning and collecting garbage in the city. Meanwhile, a Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) official, said the demands of the sweepers are being looked into. “The order is meant to maintain cleanliness across the city and is not draconian”, he added.
