Phulbani: The future of conjoined twins seems to be in the dark with their family struggling to arrange funds for their surgery. The twins were born with their heads fused together.
The one-and-half year old twins are fighting for their lives while their hapless parents run from pillar to post begging for help. The family is a resident of Milupada village under Phiringia block in Kandhamal district.
The conjoined boys were born to Bhuiyan Kanhar and Puspanjali at Phiringia community health centre April 9, 2015. While the birth was a cause for celebrations, their fused heads stunned everyone.
Soon, the CHC doctors referred them to Phulbani district headquarters hospital for further treatment from where they were sent to Cuttack’s SCB Medical College and Hospital.
However, the doctors at SCB failed to conduct an operation to separate the heads even after repeated attempts, the couple said. The operation can only be conducted at a premier Delhi based hospital, they said.
Devoid of options, the couple returned to their village hoping to collect funds from the administration. While the district administration has assured to help with `60,000, the couple claims an amount of `5 lakh is required for the operation.
“We have tried every means to arrange the amount required for the operation but in vain. How can a poor family like us arrange such a huge amount? It has been more than a year now,” a dejected Bhuiyan Kanhar said.
Meanwhile, the babies are struggling to survive. While one wants to sit, the other stands up.
Earlier, both the husband and wife used to work. “Now, someone has to stay back to take care of the babies. We have pleaded with the administration to provide some help to save the babies,” they said. PNN
