Bhubaneswar, Sept 11: Police are in search of a conman who has been allegedly cheating gullible users of their money at ATM kiosks by offering help. Two cheating cases were registered at Niali and Pipli police stations, pointing at the involvement of the same perpetrator.
At Pipli, a retired government servant, Daitari Parida, lodged a complaint September 9 that a man stole his ATM card and withdrew `3,000 from his account. The conman struck another ATM kiosk at Niali September 7 employing similar tricks with another man there.
Parida said that when he was struggling to withdraw cash from an ATM September 2, a man offered help and stole his ATM card after guiding him how to withdraw money.
Parida learnt later that the man had withdrawn `3,000 from his account the next day from an ATM in Ganjam. When someone called him September 8 and blamed him for illegally withdrawing money from his account, Parida smelt something was wrong. He lodged a complaint with the police the next day.
The conman struck another ATM kiosk at Niali September 7 employing similar tricks with another man there. After helping him withdraw money, he gave the man Parida’s card and kept his. The conman later withdrew `18,000 from this ATM card.
The second victim then called up Parida and abused him assuming that Parida was the conman. He subsequently lodged a complaint at Niali police station. Police are looking for the unknown conman with the help of CCTV cameras installed inside the ATMs.
