Nayagarh/ Nuagaon: Vigilance sleuths arrested the officer-in-charge (OIC) of Nuagaon police station in Nayagarh district on charge of accepting extortion money of Rs 2,500 from a restaurant owner Monday.
The accused OIC Sachidananda Samantray had threatened Jugal Barad, the proprietor of Subhalakhsmi restaurant at Biruda Square in Nuagaon, to cancel his food license and get a case register against him in excise department for selling liquor.
Samantray is accused of often visiting the restaurant and demanding food for free. He had visited the restaurant February 2 and asked Barad to show his food license. Barad showed him the license which was to expire February 5. When the officer reprimanded Barad for not renewing the license, the latter told he had applied for the same.
Samantray demanded Rs 3000 per month to help him run the restaurant without any hassles. The amount was finally settled at Rs 2,500 per month after Barad expressed his inability to pay Rs 3,000.
Left with no option, Barad lodged a complaint with Nayagarh Vigilance sleuths. He was handing over Rs 2,500 in cash to Samantaray as per a plan when the Vigilance sleuths caught the officer red-handed. PNN
