Bhubaneswar, June 21: In a bid to extend support to women, commissionerate police has proposed to bring anti-human trafficking unit, an integrated unit to tackle crime against women, and Mahila police station under one roof here.
Twin city police commissioner Yogesh Bahadur Khurania told Orissa POST they have written to the state government to set up a building in Bhubaneswar where the three agencies can simultaneously operate to provide robust services to women.
“We already have anti-human trafficking unit and integrated unit to tackle crime against women. But a separate building has not been set up for these agencies,” the police commissioner said.
On being asked if any site was identified by them for these agencies, Khurania said if the project gets clearance, they will mull about the location. “The project expenses will be jointly undertaken by the state government and the Union government. Once the proposal is passed we will take a call about where the three agencies will operate simultaneously. The proposal is part of commissionerate police’s ‘vision 2020’.
The police commissioner also informed this newspaper that at least 3, 000 CCTV cameras will be installed in the twin cities under ‘safe city project for women’. “We will identify 300 locations in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack and install at least 3, 000 CCTV cameras near women’s hostels, educational institutes, women colleges, market areas and the live footage would be accessed at commissionerate police’s control room here. A control room in Cuttack will also be set up by the end of this year. We have urged the state government to set up a cyber police station in Bhubaneswar to investigate cyber crimes against women,” Khurania said.
“Besides installing CCTV cameras, every zone in the twin cities will have a ‘Shakti’ team to check crime against women. Shakti team will have four officials, including two women officials, who will respond to calls from women in distress at the earliest. We will also impart self-defence training to women so that they can tackle any untoward incident,” he added.
The ‘‘safe city project for women’’ is proposed under Nirbhaya scheme of Women and Child Development ministry.
While the Union government bears 60 per cent of the project’s expenses, the state government bears 40 per cent.
