New Delhi, July 19: Responding to concerns expressed by several MPs cutting across party lines, the Union government told the Lok Sabha special measures have been initiated to tackle cybercrime in the country.
Replying to a volley of questions on the issue, minister of state for home affairs Kiren Rijiju said cyber crimes have gone up alarmingly. ‘‘In the last few years the menace has escalated.
After the infamous Dadri mob lynching incidents, more nuisance has spread in cyberspace. The government has acted by putting curbs with the involvement of courts,” Rijiju said.
Terming cybercrime as an ‘‘evolving crime’’ the MoS said measures to tackle the issue have been taken by the government.
‘‘The government has decided to train 90,000 police personnel specially to tackle cybercrime. At least 15,000 public prosecutors will be trained to handle judicial cases relating to it in a better way. Besides, 36 cybercrime training centres will be set up, 2,000 personnel will undertake certificate courses in this study while 100 special officials will undertake M.Tech courses to tackle the issue,” he said.
According to the government, private universities will be roped in for the process so that the massive training for the police officials and other concerned officials could be undertaken.
When asked by MP Sudip Bandhopdhay (AITC) about the poor conviction rate in cybercrime cases, the MoS termed the process as ‘‘very complex’’.
‘‘Cybercrime is a complex issue. We have manpower crunch too. But we have started training and sensitising the police and other officials on the issue,” he said.
Union Home minister Rajnath Singh, meanwhile, intervened to say that, “I accept there are lacunae, but we are committed to working on it. For tackling cybercrime we had constituted a panel led by Dr Gulab Rai in December 2014. Rai has submitted a report on ways to tackle cybercime and we will work on the recommendations.”
