Bhawanipatna: A cotton farmer, Bahadur Rana (42) of Madiguda village under this block in Kalahandi district, who had consumed pesticides Saturday night over crop loss and loan burden, breathed his last Sunday while undergoing treatment at Titilagarh government hospital, reports said.
Family members claimed Rana took the extreme step under debt-burden. He is now survived by his widow Sabya Rana and two minor children with no one to take care of them.
According to family members, Rana had taken a loan of `4 lakh from banks and private moneylenders to cultivate cotton in his four-acre farmland this season. He was expecting a bumper harvest and profits, but his standing crop was washed away in the flash floods due to heavy rainfall in the state triggered by the low pressure in the Bay of Bengal a couple of weeks back.
Since then he was under severe mental pressure of repaying his loans and making both ends meet and provide education to his two minor children.
