Bhapur: In a tragic end to a marital feud, a young couple committed suicide after a spat between them went too far at Aukhama village under Bhapur police limits in Dhenkanal district Saturday.
The deceased were identified as Narayan Sahu (32) and his wife Sandhyarani (27). While Narayan ended his life by hanging himself from the ceiling, Sandhya set herself on fire and later succumbed to severe burn injuries at SCB Medical College and Hospital.
Narayan and Sandhya, both natives of Bhatimunda village in Cuttack district, got married in 2013 after a long relationship. Six months after getting married, the couple shifted to Aukhama village where Narayan found a job at an aluminium factory at Tentulipatna near Shankarpur.
Neighbours said the couple got into a huge argument late Friday night. Narayan reportedly stormed into his room and bolted himself from the inside. Sandhya went to sleep in another room and woke up Saturday morning.
She then knocked on Shankar’s door and on getting no response, looked through the window to see her husband hanging from the ceiling.
Dumbstruck with shock, Sandhya proceeded to the kitchen and doused herself in kerosene and set herself on fire. Neighbours heard her screams of pain and rushed to the house, only to find her engulfed in flames. They rescued her and rushed her to the district headquarters hospital in an ambulance, and later to Cuttack where she died while undergoing treatment.
Police reached the couple’s house and launched an investigation after registering a case. Narayan’s body was handed over to his family after a post-mortem was conducted. The incident spread shockwaves in the area as villagers thronged to the couple’s house after learning about the incident. PNN
