Kendujhar: A couple was killed after a speeding trailer hit their motorcycle from behind on National Highway 20 near Dhrupada under Kendujhar Town police limits Wednesday, police said.
The deceased were identified as Kahnu Charan Mohanta, 48, and his wife, Rajanirani Mohanta, 42, of Binj Bahal village near Jagamohanpur under Telkoi police limits. Mohanta, a teacher, was the headmaster of Saraswati Shishu Mandir at Raisuan under Sadar police limits.
According to police, the couple was travelling on their motorcycle (OR-09-P-4473) to Dharanidhar Medical College and Hospital in Kendujhar for a health check-up when a trailer approaching from behind hit their vehicle.
The impact threw both of them under the trailer, killing them on the spot.
Rajanirani was dragged along with the motorcycle for about 100 metres, police said.
The trailer driver fled the scene following the accident. On being informed, Town police recovered the bodies and sent them to the district headquarters hospital for post-mortem.
The bodies were later handed over to the family members. Police registered a case (958/2026) in connection with the accident and seized the motorcycle.
Town police Inspector-in-Charge Srikant Sahu said an investigation was underway to identify the trailer involved in the crash. The couple is survived by a son who is studying in Class VIII.
