India is a land of diversity and uniqueness. But even then there are certain incidents which continue to surprise many. Despite modernisation, bizarre taboos and traditions continue to exists in India. And it is because of these peculiar traditions that a village in Himachal Pradesh has come into limelight.
Pani village situated in HP is a place where newly-married couples have to remain naked for five days. This tradition is titled ‘Manikarna’ and is done to keep the deity of ‘Leahua Ghond’ happy. During this period, the husbands doesn’t smoke or drink and also are not allowed to speak to their wives. In essence, they become complete strangers to one another.
The tradition comes from the belief that such an act will prevent the deity from getting angry. Mythological tales which have floated down centuries, state that once upon a time huge monsters entered this village and caused mayhem. However, once the deity of Leahua Ghond arrived the monsters disappeared or were killed. Since then the custom of going naked for five days has been continuing.
