Bhubaneswar: The state government Saturday issued a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) on how tablet favipiravir can be administered to COVID-19 patients who are in home isolation.

In a letter, additional chief secretary PK Mohapatra directed all district collectors, municipal commissioners, CDMOs, PHOs and superintendents of all government medical college and hospitals to ensure administration of favipiravir to patients in home isolation with strict adherence to SOP.

According to the SOP, rapid response teams will be trained to assess the patients in home isolation to see if they are eligible for administration of the tablet. The tablet can only be administered to patients in consultation with the trained doctors.

The team will also inform the patients and their family members about the tablet’s side effects, precautions and actions to be taken after administration of the tablet. Before initiation of the therapy, the team will collect the consent of the patients. They will ensure availability of the tablet for a five-day course.

The rapid response teams will also ensure shifting of patients to hospitals in case their condition worsens.
