Bhubaneswar: Mancheswar police early late Tuesday night nabbed a noted criminal from Puri bypass road amid exchange of fire between cops and the criminal.
The police identified the miscreant as Sasank Naik alias Sashi (27) of Pathuria Sahi in Puri district.
Bhubaneswar deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Satyabrata Bhoi told the media Wednesday that a team of Mancheswar police intercepted Sasank along with his associates during patrolling in the area on the intervening night of February 16/17.
“Sasank and his associates were on motorcycles and tried to flee when the saw the police. Sasank opened fire at the cops who retaliated and the former was shot at his right leg. Sasank was arrested and is undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. However, his associates managed to flee the spot,” the DCP said.
“Several cases of murders, attempts to murder, dacoity, extortion and others have been registered against Sasank at various police stations in Puri. The criminal was staying in Kalinga Vihar area here for the last few months. We have seized a motorcycle (Super Splendour), one 9-mm mauser, two live cartridges, Rs 1,100 and one gold chain from his possession,” he added.
Mancheswar police said they are investigating the matter and have launched a search operation to nab Sasank’s associates. PNN
