Bhubaneswar: Oct 7: Violence marked publication of final lists of candidates contesting students’ union polls in most of the major colleges of the capital city, Tuesday. An unidentified miscreant hurled at least two bombs at the Rama Devi SC Hostel situated behind the university campus.
Sources said a bike-borne miscreant hurled two low-intensity bombs inside the hostel premises at 12 noon and fled from the spot. The hostel houses about 450 girls. Hostel authorities said no one was injured in the incident, but one of the glass windows was damaged in the blasts. College authorities slammed the incident and demanded a proper police investigation into the case.
They said they are not sure if the commissionerate police had provided security to the hostel. After the incident, a few students affiliated to Biju Chhatra Janata Dal (BCJD) held a peace rally in protest against the violence. Sahid Nagar police reached the spot to take stock of the situation and to prevent a further untoward incident. Police said the reason behind the bombings is yet to be ascertained.
Sources said individuals who think their candidates have a very dim chance of winning might have caused the blasts to cancel the elections.
Students of Maharishi College of Natural Law also protested in the area Tuesday afternoon after its principal Basant Sahoo scrapped the polls.
