Bhubaneswar: Commissionerate police Tuesday informed the media a carbine gun recovered from arrested Dhalasamanta brothers was built at Indian Ordnance Factory in Kolkata.
“We had sent the carbine gun to a forensic lab for examination. It has been ascertained that the gun was manufactured by Indian Ordnance Factory in Kolkata,” twin city police commissioner Yogesh Bahadur Khurania told reporters.
“A team of commissionerate police will leave for Kolkata to investigate how Dhalasamanta brothers, Sushanta and Sushil obtained the gun. The officials will investigate whether the duo has links with the ordnance unit in Kolkata or they obtained the highly sophisticated weapon from any retired defence personnel. The officials will also find out the person on whose name the carbine gun has been issued,” Khurania said.
Police sources said a licenced gun holder can buy weapons from an ordnance factory, but carbine guns can be obtained only by paramilitary and police officials.
The carbine gun is a long arm firearm but with a shorter barrel than a rifle or musket. Many carbines are shortened versions of full length rifles, shooting the same ammunition, while others fire low-powered ammunition, including those designed for pistols.
On being asked about former Rourkela MLA Braja Kishore Mohanty’s son Asesh Mohanty alias Bulu’s alleged links with the notorious criminals, Khurania said the investigation is underway.
Earlier, Chauliaganj police March 7 questioned Bulu in connection with his links with the Dhalasamanta brothers.
The gangster duo had fixed the tender for `12-crore road project connecting Timber Colony in Rourkela with Malgodown with the help of a contractor with whom Bulu was working. Work on the road project has already begun.
During interrogation, police managed to elicit crucial information from Bulu about his links with the duo and how they fixed the tender, and their criminal networks, said sources.
Police learnt that the criminal siblings frequently visited Rourkela and their five to six associates were working there. The officials also learned how tenders were being fixed and the role of government officials and contractors in the racket. Bulu is reported to have told police where the criminal duo used to reside in Rourkela.
Bulu, a former councilor of Rourkela municipality, himself resides in Basanti Colony. He had won the civic elections on a Congress ticket in 2008. He joined BJP later. His father being a former MLA, Bulu is said to be influential in the area.
