Daita servitor sent to jail for assaulting doctor

Puri, June 24: Sri Jagannath Temple managing committee member and Daitapati Niyog secretary Premananda Das Mohapatra and his son-in-law Nabakrushna Prusty were Friday remanded in 14-day judicial custody, a day after they were arrested for allegedly assaulting a doctor.
Kumbharpada police had arrested Mohapatra and Prusty for allegedly assaulting Khirod Chandra Pal of the district headquarters hospital (DHH). The two had been produced at the sub-divisional judicial magistrate (SDJM) court here. They had applied for bail but their pleas were rejected.
Pal was on outdoor duty at the DHH Thursday night when Mohapatra went there for treatment of his granddaughter, accompanied by his daughter and son-in-law when the altercation occurred, sources said. The doctor sustained injuries in his eyes and head.
Police registered a case on the basis of a complaint by the doctor. Mohapatra also lodged a complaint alleging that the doctor assaulted him first.
Later, police arrested Mohap­atra and Prusty. Medical tests were conducted Friday at the DHH before they were produced in the SDJM court.
Kumbharpada police had rai­ded a gambling den January 23 and arrested 12 persons includ­ing Mohapatra and seized Rs 1.69 lakh, eight motorcycles and seven cell phones, sources said.
