Dhenkanal: Sagging high tension livewires that have claimed the lives of seven elephants in this district Saturday also pose serious threats to human lives.
The engineers and staff of power distribution company Central Electricity Supply Utility (CESU) and its subsidiary Enzen have been asked several times to repair and raise the height of the sagging wires, but the latter are yet to wake up to the situation.
They have become emboldened to such an extent that they are refusing to abide by the order of the district administration, sources said.
It is apprehended that a major mishap might occur anytime in any part of the district including Dhenkanal town as high tension wires are dangling at a lower height at many places. The issue is yet to be addressed despite the residents and members of puja committees having raised it umpteen times at various meeting before the Lakshmi Puja.
Six persons were electrocuted after the passenger bus they were travelling in came in contact with a sagging wire in Bhuban two years back. Besides, three elephants were electrocuted after coming in contact with sagging livewires at Borapada in this district two years back.
The forest department except registering cases against a few CESU officials has failed to anything substantial.
When contacted, Swapna Sarit Mishra, executive engineer, CESU in Dhenkanal said efforts are being made to change the poles and wires posing threat to human and animal lives in Dhenkanal town and district.
