Malkangiri: Although the cyclonic storm ‘Daye’ has weakened into a deep depression, and is concentrated now over Chhattisgarh, its effect continues to linger in Malkangiri district.
The situation in several parts of the district is grim after the heavy rains two days ago. Many major rivers continue to flow above the danger level, inundating low lying areas and throwing normal life out of gear.
While communication to places like Kalimela, Padia, Motu, Balimela, MV-11, MV-37 and Korkanda have been cut, acres of farmlands still remain submerged due to the 50-feet breach in the Satiguda canal.
Five feet water continues to flow over MV-11 Bridge and 3-feet water over Poetru Bridge, disrupting land links between Malkangiri and Balimela. The road to Sukma in Chhattisgarh is also damaged.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has already announced 7-day relief for the tribal district, and around 2,000 people have been shifted to safer places where cooked food and drinking water are being made available.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) have been deployed in the affected areas for relief and rescue operations.
