Bhubaneswar, Jan 28: Top seed GM Debashis Das and IM Swayams Mishra of Orissa triumphed over their respective opponents quiet easily in the first round of the Xth Siddha Youth Chess at Kolkata, Thurday.
Debashis had little difficulty to beat Dilip Kumar Pedda. Playing with black pieces, Debashis who has an ElO rating of 2571 points had a rook and two minor pieces against the latter’s two rooks at the Khudiram Anushilan Kendra.
Swayams (2,539) sailed through with ease against young Utsav Mukherjee of Bengal as he obtained two rooks and extra pawns against his opponent’s rook and knight.
In other matches played on the day, Bidita Shenoy stunned sixth seed Kaustav Kundu in only 13 moves employing the Slaf defense. IM Diptayan Ghosh (2495) playing black against H Venkatesh had two powerful bishops against Venkatesh’s lone rook and had little difficulty in getting the full point.
About 700 players are vying for top honours in the seven round Swiss league Rapid Championship.
