Debutant Shesh finishes Mumbai

Cuttack, April 1: Hosts Orissa defeated Mumbai by 17 runs to register their first win the Super League of Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 cricket tournament at the DRIEMS Ground in Tangi, Wednesday. Left-arm spinner, debutant Sheshdeep Patra (5/18) bowled brilliantly to ensure victory.

After the match was reduced to 15 overs following early morning rain, Orissa opted to bat first after winning the toss. Openers Anurag Sarangi (16) and wicketkeeper-batsman P Roshan Rrao (48, 34b, 6×4, 1×6) played some beautiful shots as they put on 33 runs in 3.1 overs. After the departure of Anurag, vice-captain Govind Podder (24,22b, 2×4) joined Roshan and the two added 47 runs for the second wicket. But once Podder departed, Orissa started losing wickets at regular intervals. As a result, Orissa could manage only 125 runs in their stipulated overs. But they were able to do that due to some lower order lusty hitting by Suryakant Pradhan (20, 7b, 1×4, 2×6)

In reply, Orissa started pressurising Mumbai from the very first ball and a fiery spell from Deepak Behera (2/9) saw Mumbai lose their first two wickets with only a run on board. Mumbai though tried to put up some fight through Shoaib Shabbir Shaikh (34, 32b, 3×4) and Shasank Singh (21, 13b, 3×4, 1×6) but it was newcomer Sheshdeep who destroyed Mumbai hopes. The 40-time Ranji champions could manage only 108 before being bundled out.
