Bhubaneswar, July 27: The Meteorological Centre Monday traced the depression over the northeast Bay of Bengal hovering around 340 km east of Balasore. As a result of the cyclonic system, north and south Orissa will witness heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours.
“The depression over northeast Bay of Bengal and coastal areas of Bangladesh and West Bengal remained stationary and lay centred about 340 km east of Balasore at 5:30 pm Monday. The system is likely to remain practically stationary for some more time and may concentrate into a deep depression Tuesday,” stated a Met bulletin.
The current disturbance over the sea will trigger rain or thundershower at most places of the state with northern and southern parts of the state likely to be the worst-affected in terms of heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours.
“The system is moving at a slow pace which is likely to concentrate into a deep depression Tuesday. We have raised a storm signal warning III at all four ports of the state keeping in view choppy conditions of the sea. The system is not as likely to convert into a cyclone,” said Met director Sarat Sahu.
The rainfall Monday was not promising over the state with the Met officials recording highest of 35 mm rain over Keonjhar followed by 10 mm at Daringbadi and 7.5 mm at Phulbani. However, rainfall was good Sunday night as many places witnessed good rainfall with the highest of 71 mm being mapped at Chandbali.
