Bhubaneswar: Director General of Police (DGP) RP Sharma Tuesday directed the police personnel and issued separate set of advisories to educational institutions, parents and students to keep the educational institutions crime free.
The DGP said crimes among students have been increasing manifold day by day which has been a major concern for college authorities, parents and police.
He said students are indulging in various criminal, anti-social activities like rape, murder, assault, unlawful activities, eve-teasing, molestation, kidnapping for ransom, theft, drug addiction, stalking, hacking and extortion.
The DGP said there is an urgent need to undertake suitable measures to deal with these problems and make the educational institutions a crime-free zone.
Sharma directed the cops to conduct regular patrolling in and around the college premises, stop sale of drug, tobacco and contraband products near educational institutions.
The DGP also directed the police to take steps against outsiders and ex-students as per law, who create anti-social activities within the campus, deploy plain cloth personnel to detect outsiders, remain in regular touch with college authorities and students and to impart orientation programmes on crime related issues.
The students should be cautioned that during police verification if anything adverse is found, the concerned person will be debarred from any employment in both public and private organisations.
The police chief also advised educational management authorities to inform all law and order problem to police.
Every college authority should create a database of all students studying in the institution and share it with local police, deploy security guards from registered agencies in the campus and sensitise them about their duties and other security related matters, install CCTV cameras in the college premises, hostels, canteens and at other vulnerable points.
They should arrange for counselling of students against addiction of drugs, alcohol, and misuse of electronic devices, keep watch on the movement of students staying outside.
The DGP advised the college authorities to organise anti-ragging awareness meetings and to take steps to form anti-ragging committee in the college to curb ragging.
The DGP advised the parents of students studying in various professional educational institutions from outside to frequently visit their wards, look after their wellbeing and keep a watch on their activities. The students should keep good cooperation with police and college authorities, discuss their problems and must not resort to violence.
Sharma advised the students to adopt safety norms before accessing social media and to refrain from bad company. The students, he said, should refrain from visiting hotels, pubs, bars and give up habit of taking intoxicants.
Cops were instructed to prohibit loud speakers and other sound polluting systems within 100 metres of educational institutions.
College authorities were advised to construct well-built boundaries around the institutions to prevent unauthorised entry.
Awareness drive on cyber crime
Cuttack: The Crime Branch (CB) has installed an LED screen at its headquarters here to spread awareness on cyber crimes like ATM fraud, posting of obscene photos and videos of women on social media and cheating through online lottery. “Awareness among people can help police curb cyber crimes. Installation of an LED screen is a step in this direction. We are mulling to launch similar awareness drives at police stations,” said Additional Director General of Police (crimes) Santosh Kumar Upadhyay. Former Inspector General of Police Anadi Sahu, meanwhile, asked the CB to install boards at railway stations, bus stands and other strategic points to make people aware of cyber crimes.
